Collier county is located in southwest Florida. There are two local municipal police departments within the county, Marco Island and Naples. Collier county has a notoriously difficult Judiciary and the changes routinely suspend drivers licenses, especially on speeding tickets 30 over the posted speed limit. The infamous alligator alley runs through the county where it connects with Broward County. The Florida Highway Patrol has an entire squad assigned to Interstate 75, in particular alligator alley. In conjuction with laser and radar guns, the FHP uses a fixed-wing aircraft in an attempt to curtail speeders. This pilot hovers over white lines in the roadway that are spaced one-quarter mile apart from each other. The pilot uses a stop watch to clock motorists and then sequences the vehicles down to a trooper on the ground who pulls the driver over.
There were over 27,000 speeding citations issued in Collier County in 2007. Overall, there were almost 54,000 non-criminal moving violations issued by Collier County law enforcement. In addition to non-criminal violations, local law enforcement arrested over 1500 people for DUI in 2007. Most of these arrests were made by the Collier County Sheriffs Office.
