Stephen Horne is awaiting trial on felony charges of reckless driving with serious bodily injury stemming from a August 25 accident that cost a Tampa man both of his legs, part of his hand and nearly his life. Tampa police determined that Horne was texting while driving and that distraction caused him to run over 20-year-old Manny Mejia. That has lawmakers and police officers firmly standing behind proposed laws or bans to curb reckless driving caused by distractions like text messaging.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Commission approximately 6,000 people were killed due to distracted driving. That is why one Lakeland senator is proposing a $30 traffic fine for Florida residents who violate a texting ban while driving. There are numerous bills currently being proposed in Florida to limit driver

We have already seen the Federal Government step in and ban text messaging and driving for commercial drivers . Numerous states have also weighed in on the issue and imposed texting bans on truck drivers , bus drivers and city employees driving a government vehicle. Some states even have laws in place to stop their citizens from distracted driving. It seems Iowa is set to join that list.

By a 20-1 vote an Iowa House committee approved the ban on texting and driving and the law is expected to be approved when it hits the floor in front of the full House. The law was narrowly focused on just text messaging and did not tackle the other issues surrounding distracted driving like talking on a cell phone or using hands-free devices. Penalties include fines and license suspensions depending on whether or not the texting caused an accident.
