There has been a lot of debate about the motives of counties and cities all across the state of Florida in reference to the surge in red-light cameras. Proponents are arguing that red-light runners are a huge safety hazard while the other side claims the traffic tickets issued by the cameras are nothing more than fund raisers for cash-strapped municipalities.

The website the Consumerist.com has a story today that seems to throw more fuel on the fire for those who believe the Florida traffic citations issued by those cameras are solely for financial gain. A woman and her husband challenged a ticket for running a red light by timing the interval between the yellow and red lights. They found the interval was almost one second less than county guidelines require. For conspiracy theorists, it may not seem like an oversight as Collier County is claiming.

There has been plenty of news surrounding the red light cameras that are issuing tickets in towns all over Florida. Most of it has been about how the system is ticketing the wrong people and how one Florida lawyer is challenging the legality of these cameras. Now comes more controversy. The Lakeland Ledger is reporting it witnessed three city vehicles turn right on red lights without stopping, a big point of contention with many who have received these tickets, but none of the city vehicles were cited for running a red light.

The reporter is now questioning how evenly tickets are handed out and if drivers of city vehicles are being excused for paying the fines that other Lakeland drivers are having to fork over. Since June there have been 16,619 tickets issued from the red light camera system and over $2 million raised yet only two have been issued to city owned vehicles. The Lakeland Ledger has tried to work with the company in charge of the cameras to receive videos and answers to their questions but have only been mildly successful according to the story.
